What This Does

Adobe Firefly can turn a few written words about mood, materials and light into a mood board or a handful of concept images. They help a first client conversation along when you want to ask "closer to this or this?" before you invest hours in real selections and renderings.

Before You Start

  • You have an Adobe account that includes Firefly. Adobe's Firefly page lists features by name, including Generate AI Image, Generate Mood Board and Generate Vision Board. Plans and generation limits change, so check Adobe's plans page for what your account includes
  • You have a short written brief for the concept: room, mood words, materials, light and what the client has told you they love and dislike

Words only. Describe what you want in text. Do not upload a client's photos (their home, family or possessions), a floor plan, or any other photographer's, designer's or manufacturer's images unless you hold the rights. Leave out the client's name and address. Before you use any tool for client work, read its terms and data settings, including whether your prompts or outputs are used to improve the service. Ask a lawyer about ownership and commercial use before anything important depends on an image. This guide takes no position on either.

Steps

1. Open Firefly and find the feature

Sign in to Adobe Firefly through Adobe's site. Adobe's features page names Generate Mood Board and Generate AI Image. Exact menu names and placement change often, so look for those names or for a similar option on the Firefly home screen. If you cannot find them, search Adobe's help pages for the current location.

2. Write the prompt from your brief

Use plain description in place of a client's name or a brand's name. For example:

Prompt

A calm living room mood board: warm white plaster walls, oak flooring, a deep green velvet sofa, woven natural textures, brass accents, soft morning light, relaxed and a little old-world.

For a single concept image, add the room type and viewpoint, such as "eye-level view of a small dining nook with a round oak table." Run a few versions and change one idea at a time.

3. Pick what is useful and discard the rest

Keep two or three images that capture a direction. Delete anything with odd details, such as warped furniture legs, impossible window placement or garbled text. Treat images as mood only. They do not show real dimensions, scale, clearances, true colors or real products.

4. Label the images as AI concepts

When you show the client, say plainly that these are AI concept images and not renderings of the real design. Put a short caption on the board such as "AI concept for discussion. Not to scale. Final materials and colors confirmed with physical samples." Colors on screen will not match the real ones, so physical samples decide color. Any products come from the manufacturer's spec sheet, never from an AI image.

5. Hand off to your real process

Once the client picks a direction, build the real board from actual products, your own photography or licensed images, and your own drawings.

Real Example

Scenario: A new client says she likes "calm, earthy and a bit moody" and you have a first meeting tomorrow.

What you type: The mood board prompt in Step 2.

What you get: A board of related images in warm, muted tones. You keep the two that match her words, caption them as AI concepts, and ask her which one feels closer. Her answer goes into the written design brief.

Tips

  • Name materials and light, not furniture brands. Brand names tend to invite lookalike products you cannot source.
  • Keep a short prompt log in the project folder, so you can reproduce a direction later.
  • Do not send AI images to a vendor as a product request. Send the spec sheet and your selection.

Tool interfaces change. If a button has moved, look for similar AI/magic/smart options in the same menu area.
